Today's Route

Powell River:
With a resident population of approximately 14,000, the city of Powell River is the largest community on the Sunshine Coast. Major employers include Catalyst Paper and Western Forest Products. The first roll of paper was produced at Powell River Mill in 1912. The mill in Powell River was at one time the largest pulp and paper mill in the world. One in every 25 newspapers in the world was printed on paper from the Powell River mill. However, since then, it has significantly cut back on production.

Lund:
Lund (population 290) is a small-craft harbor and village along the northern part of the Salish Sea. The Sunshine Coast Highway terminates at Lund. The main landmark in the village is the Lund Hotel, established in 1905. Lund is also home to many shops and services, including a general store, a restaurant overlooking the water, kayak and adventure tourism stores, and Nancy's Bakery (4-Star)—one of my favorite bakeries. Lund was named by brothers Frederick and Charles Thulin, who emigrated from Sweden. When they settled at the harbor in 1889, they named it after Lund, Sweden, because it was a Swedish name and fairly easy for non-Scandinavians to pronounce. Lund destination rating: 4-Star.

The Patricia Theatre in Powell River opened in 1913—entertaining customers with silent movies, vaudeville shows, and even local boxing matches. The Patricia Theater claims to be the longest-running movie theatre in Canada.

Mile Marker Zero
In 2009, the community of Lund built a “Mile 0” marker at the location of the northern terminus of the highway. If the marker is ever disassembled, the time capsule inside will reveal items that were of interest in 2009. The building in the background is the historic Lund Hotel (circa 1905).
