The Sunshine Coast stretches 110 miles from Howe Sound to Desolation Sound. Forestry and tourism drive much of the local economy. The Sunshine Coast can be reached only by ferry or by floatplane. No access roads have been built around or across the fjords, separating it from the rest of the province. It takes two ferry crossings to reach Powell River: Horseshoe Bay-Langdale (12 miles/1 hour 12 min) and Earls Cove-Saltery Bay (50 miles /1 hour 18 min).
