VIEWS FROM OUR DECK
Eagle Ridge, Astoria, Oregon
Our rear deck faces south with wonderful views of the Youngs River, the Saddle Mountain State Natural Area, and the Clatsop State Forest. The Youngs River is a tributary of the Columbia River, approximately 27 miles long. It drains the Northern Oregon Coast Range, entering the Columbia River via Youngs Bay approximately 10 miles from its mouth.
The river passes over Youngs River Falls. The falls were encountered in 1806 by a hunting party of the Lewis and Clark Expedition from nearby Fort Clatsop.

This boat, the "Ben Claire," has been abandoned to the seagulls. It has been tied to a piling in Youngs River for many years. The boat is called a double-ender because its bow and stern are V-shaped, similar to a canoe. This boat is probably over 100 years old. [6.8.23]
