ROAD TRIP:
ASTORIA t0 DEPOE BAY, OR

I have driven dozens of times through the small town of Depoe Bay, OR (population 1,400), but never stopped. On this trip, I stayed a few days and explored the area. A tiny 6-acre harbor at Depoe Bay is promoted as the world's smallest navigable harbor. Noyo Harbor in California is still my favorite small harbor. The distance between Depot Bay and Astoria is 120 winding miles.

Located in Depoe Bay Harbor is a small Coast Guard station equipped with a 47-foot motor lifeboat (seen in photo). Depose Bay has appeared in several films. The fishing trip sequence in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was filmed in Depoe Bay (1975). The harbor sequence in Hysterical was filmed with the Depoe Bay Bridge prominently shown in the background (1983). Restaurant scenes from The Burning Plain were filmed at the Tidal Raves restaurant (2008).
Entrance Channel to Depoe Bay
This photo was taken at low tide. My hotel room is marked by a red "X". The first night I stayed there, the inlet was completely obscured by storm waves . During calm weather, the harbor channel was busy with Coast Guard, fishing, and whale-watching boats. Stormy Oregon Coast
Location: Arcadia Beach, Oregon. Arcadia Beach is a 1-mile sandy beach situated 3 miles south of Cannon Beach. Viewed from US Highway 101.

Yaquina Head Lighthouse
The Yaquina Head Lighthouse was first named the Cape Foulweather Lighthouse. Located on Yaquina Head near Newport, the tower stands 93 feet tall and is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon. The lighthouse still uses its original 1868 French-made, 1st-order Fresnel lens, visible from 19 miles away. Yaquina Head Lighthouse was the setting for the "Moesko Island Lighthouse" in the 2002 film The Ring. It also appeared in an earlier film, Hysterical (1983), and The Nancy Drew Mysteries 1977 television series episode The Mystery of Pirate's Cove.
Endangered Species
Newspapers have been dying in slow motion for decades. Fortunately, the small town of Depoe Bay is still getting the news.
