Nanaimo:
Nanaimo is the third oldest city in British Columbia. Located 68 miles north of Victoria, it is Vancouver Island's second largest city. The name "Nanaimo" is derived from the Coast Salish Natives also known as "Snenymo". The first Europeans to find Nanaimo Bay were the Spanish in 1791. Originally a coal mining town, established in 1852, lumber replaced coal in the 1940s as the major industry. Nanaimo is now the island's largest export center. A major ferry terminal provides connections to the mainland. Waterfront walkways, gardens, lawns and beaches have replaced the industrial ports. Nanaimo has a temperate climate with mild, rainy winters and cool, dry summers. Scenic rating for Nanaimo = B. Mary and I stayed at the Dorchester Hotel (3-Star) in the old downtown area, and had a great harbor-view from our room. The current hotel configuration combines two or three previously unrelated buildings. We felt like lab rats negotiating the maze of hallways.

Love all those photos. The Old Palace Hotel is wonderful, and the gritty look of the shackles and eyebolt thingie is very dramatic.
I left a comment earlier, but now it isn't showing up. Very nice group of photos!
