Waterfalls - Columbia River Gorge

COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE
WATERFALLS
April 18, 2022

Today, I visited three of the more than ninety waterfalls along the Columbia River Gorge: Latourell Falls, Multnomah Falls, and Horsetail Falls. A typical Oregon day .... it rained all day. I was continually wiping my camera dry.

Latourell Falls
Latourell Falls is a single-plunge 224-foot waterfall.  It is the closest to Portland of the major Columbia River Gorge waterfalls. Latourell Falls is unique among the best-known Columbia Gorge waterfalls, in the way that it drops straight down from an overhanging basalt cliff. Most of the Gorge's falls (even the famous Multnomah Falls) tumble to some degree. Latourell Falls is named after Joseph Latourell, a 19th-century local settler. The Latourell family had a house, now abandoned but still standing, near the current state park picnic area.

Multnomah Falls
Multnomah Falls drops in two major steps, split into an upper fall of 542 feet and a lower fall of 69 feet. The total height of the waterfall is 611 feet.  It is the most visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest with more than 2 million visitors annually. Unlike many of the Gorge's waterfalls, Multnomah is a year-round waterfall that is fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain.

Horsetail Falls
The aptly-named Horsetail Falls cascades down 176 feet. This falls is just steps from the highway, making it one of the few Gorge waterfalls you can see without even getting out of the car.
