Road Trip: Pendleton, OR to John Day, OR

ROADTRIP
PENDLETON, OR - JOHN DAY, OR
April 19, 2022

U.S. Highway 395 is one of my favorite highways. Today, I took Highway 395 from Pendleton to John Day (115 miles). In Oregon, the "Loneliest Highway" designation goes to U.S. 395 which offers, mile upon mile of 2-lane roads, empty blacktop, with rolling greenery and rangeland on each side. Tomorrow, I will drive 160 miles roundtrip to the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

Vintage Service Station, Store & Post Office
The first post office at this locale was established in 1887. This store and service station (elevation 2,900 ft)  have served the community since 1940. I usually like to visit such businesses, but I didn't feel like masking for Covid. Eastern Oregon is "no mask" territory.

Fox (the town, not the news) is a wide spot on the road. This off-the-beaten-track, for locals-only small town is almost a ghost town (elevation 4,400 ft). At one time, there was a lumber mill in Fox. Perhaps the closing of the mill explains the town's demise. The town was named after Fox Creek, a tributary of the John Day River. Fox was the birthplace of noted artist Morris Graves (1910 – 2001). He was one of the earliest modern artists from the Pacific Northwest to achieve national and international acclaim.

Out-of-business Store & Post Office
Fox's only store has been out-of-business for years. The post office was established circa 1883 and closed operations in 2002.

Old Fire Truck
The truck's vivid colors caught my eye in this otherwise drab town.

The church series is excellent, but on the creepy side.

I like them! A touch of sprituality everywhere you look.
