California's Highway One connects Bodega Bay and Fort Bragg. With sandy beaches, panoramic coves, rocky coastlines, redwood forests, and breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, it is one of the most scenic coastal routes in the world. Weather: Perfect. Distance driven: 130 miles.

From Russia With Love

Location: Fort Ross State Park located on California Highway 1.

 Fort Ross is a former Russian fortress on the west coast of North America in what is now Sonoma County, California. Fort Ross was the home of the Russian-American Company from 1812 to 1841. This commercial company was chartered by Russia's government. Fort Ross was the southernmost settlement in the Russian colonization of the North American continent. It was the first multi-ethnic community in northern California, with a combination of Native Californians, Native Alaskans, and Russians. The Russians, however, did not remain at Fort Ross for long. They sold it after occupying the fort for about 30 years. Subsequently, the settlement passed through the hands of several private individuals, before becoming the property of the state of California. 

The building pictured is the Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Chapel. A fire destroyed the chapel in 1970. A complete reconstruction of the chapel was undertaken in 1973. I remember when Highway 1 went through the fort before its current alignment which now bypasses the fort.
