Vintage Motel
This mom & pop motel is recognized as a National Historic Property by the National Register of Historic Places and the Utah Historical Society. The Apache Motel (built in 1954) has a long history with the film industry. The name "Apache Motel" may have its origins in one of two movies filmed a few years before the motel was constructed. Actor John Wayne spent many years filming in the Moab area and often stayed at the Apache Motel. Currently, the motel offers a "John Wayne" suite—with a bedspread decorated with horseshoes and cowboys and a huge picture of "The Duke" hanging above the bed. Director John Ford also stayed here when using Southeast Utah and sites around Moab for his western films, including Fort Apache (1948), She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (1949), Rio Grande (1950), and Wagon Master (1950). The motel claims many other film stars also stayed here: Yvonne De Carlo, Dorothy Malone, Henry Fonda, Stuart Whitman, Ricardo Montalban, Anthony Quinn, and Richard Widmark. One story contends that the motel was named after Fort Apache, though it’s uncertain. Director George Sherman’s The Battle at Apache Pass (1952) was also filmed in the area and could have inspired the name.
