Pacific Rim National Park Reserve:
Continuing from the last post ... Surfing is big here. Tofino was named the best surf town in North America in Outside Magazine's 2010 Editors' Choice awards. Rocky outcroppings provide excellent opportunities at low tide to explore tide pools. Pacific Rim is called a "national park reserve" because of pending First Nation treaty settlements. Water temperature varies little across the seasons, going from a low of 48°F in winter to a maximum of 59°F in summer.

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve:
The Clayoquot Sound region was internationally recognized for its ecological significance with the designation of the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in January of 2000. Biosphere Reserves are designations given to ecologically significant regions that promote sustainability and conservation by engaging all community stakeholders. The principle of a Biosphere Reserve is to seek creative ways of developing and maintaining ecological sustainability.

Tofino and Vicinity:
The Tofino area rewards visitors with a multitude of outdoor activities: fishing, kayaking, whale watching, bear watching, bird watching, camping, hiking, and storm watching. Tofino is no longer a rough-and-tumble frontier town. Today it is relaxed, unpretentious and friendly with good restaurants and lodging. There are even some swank beachfront resorts.

Be Aware
On October 25, 2015, shortly after our visit to Tofino, a 66-foot whale watching boat sank during calm seas in the vicinity of Plover Reef off the coast of Vargas Island near Tofino. Five of the 27 people on board were killed with one missing. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said a wave flipped the ship when most of the passengers and crew were on the top deck, raising the center of gravity and making it easier to capsize.

Chow
I gained a few pounds as a result of discovering the fresh, hand-crafted chocolates made at Chocolate Tofino. The smells from the open kitchen are marvelous! (Rating = A)

We ate lunch at the Sea Shanty Restaurant in Tofino. Great view of the harbor, nicely designed/decorated interior and the food was tasty. (Rating = B+)

Schooner Cove
Mary and I hiked a short trail (.6 mile one way), with long flights of wooden stairs, descending through a cedar/hemlock forest to the beach at Schooner Cove. From the beach are glimpses of the Village of Esowista belonging to the Tia-o-qui-aht who have lived along this shore for centuries. (Rating B+)
