Straight Shot Home

After visiting the Mono Lake/Lee Vining area, I headed straight home with overnight stops in Susanville, California and Grants Pass, Oregon.

Except for the Reno area with its freeways, U.S. Highway 395 from Lee Vining to Susanville is a scenic route and a fun drive. Scenic rating and driving fun rating are both B+.

From Susanville, Highways 44 and 89 to Interstate 5 are a nice drive through forested terrain with views of two volcanoes, Mt. Lassen (10,500 ft) and Mt. Shasta (14,200 ft). Interstate 5 through the Siskiyou Mountains and over Siskiyou Summit (4,300 ft) is scenic and a blast to drive—slow down around Lake Shasta, Weed & Yreka! Once Highway 5 descends into Ashland, Oregon at the foot of the Siskiyou Mountains, scenic beauty and driving fun disappear. Overall, the trip from Susanville to Grants Pass gets a scenic rating of B, and a driving fun rating of B.

Interstate 5 from Grants Pass to north of Portland is an awful drive and highway. It has too few lanes, drivers who tend to tailgate and big-rig truck drivers who hog the fast lane. It seems there are always miles and miles of slow-and-go traffic south of Portland. The scenery is so-so. Overall, the trip from Grants Pass to east of Astoria gets a scenic rating of C+ and a driving fun rating of D+.
