The Columbia River is the most extensive river system in the Pacific Northwest, originating in Canada and flowing 1,253 miles to the Pacific Ocean. The river's source is Columbia Lake in British Columbia, 2,690 feet above sea level.

Astoria
Pictured is the deepwater port of Astoria, Oregon, located on the Columbia River. Founded in 1811, Astoria was the first permanent American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. The current population is 10,200. (300 mm f/2.8 with 2x teleconverter).

Towering above Astoria on Coxcomb Hill, the Astoria Column overlooks the mouth of the Columbia River. Built in 1926, this concrete and steel structure is part of a 30-acre city park. The 125-foot tall column has a 164-step spiral staircase to an observation deck. Also pictured, docked near the Columbia River Maritime Museum, is a working riverboat.

The Astoria–Megler Bridge is a steel cantilever/truss bridge that spans the lower Columbia River. It carries U.S. Route 101 from Astoria, Oregon, to Point Ellice near Megler, Washington. Opened in 1966, four miles long, it is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. The bridge is featured in films Short Circuit, Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home, The Goonies, and The Night the Bridge Fell Down. (iPhone photo)

The Astoria–Megler Bridge, the city of Astoria, and an old piling field are viewed from west of Dismal Nitch, Washington, on Highway 410. Dismal Nitch was the last campsite of the Lewis and Clark Expedition before they sighted the Pacific Ocean (180mm f/2.8).
