Road Trip: Fort Bragg, CA to Eureka, CA

ROAD TRIP:
FORT BRAGG, CA to EUREKA, CA
April 27, 2022

This 150-mile drive from Fort Bragg to Eureka is one of my favorites.

North of Fort Bragg, Highway 1 follows the spectacular coast for 30 miles and then turns abruptly eastward and inland. This windy section of the highway follows Cottaneva Creek through redwood-forested mountainous terrain before meeting Highway 101 near Leggett.

The Lost Coast: The area north of where Highway 1 turns eastward is called the "Lost Coast". The Lost Coast is one of the most isolated areas in California. Most of the region's coastline is now part of either Sinkyone Wilderness State Park or King Range National Conservation Area. The geology of the Lost Coast makes it very difficult to establish highways. State Route 1, California's Pacific Coast Highway, was originally planned to continue up the coast through the Lost Coast, but in 1984 the State concluded that construction was not feasible.

Avenue of the Giants: The Avenue of the Giants has been described as the finest forest drive in the world. Lined by gigantic redwood trees, the 31-mile drive parallels Highway 101 and offers an excellent alternative to the freeway. Mostly flat with gentle curves, it passes secluded forest hamlets, campgrounds, picnic areas, and access points to the Eel River, a wild & scenic waterway.
