Pacific Rim National Park Reserve:
Mary and I continued exploring Pacific Rim National Park.

Rain Forest Trail "A":
This .62 mile loop trail, with boardwalks and many short flights of stairs, is highlighted by lush vegetation and gigantic cedar and hemlock trees. A surprise was finding two bright red Adirondack chairs at a viewpoint along the trail. (Rating = B+)

Ucluelet:
Ucluelet (population 1,600) is 20 miles southeast of Tofino and the Pacific Rim National Reserve. Ucluelet means "people of the safe harbour" in the indigenous Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) language. Located on the coast, Ucluelet has mild, rainy winters and cool summers. Temperatures over 86 °F and below 14 °F are rare. Precipitation is high, averaging around 130 inches per year, with most of it concentrated in the winter months. When compared to Tofino, the town of Ucluelet has limited lodging, shopping and restaurants, but with its waterfront location and harbor, has its own charm.

Wild Pacific Trail:
Ucluelet's Wild Pacific Trail has become a destination for many vacationers. Mary and I walked the Lighthouse Loop section of the trail. This 1.5 mile loop travels through old-growth thickets of twisted trunks, roots, ferns and moss as it hugs the wild coastline. Views of the rocky shoreline, Barclay Sound and Amphitrite Lighthouse are spectacular. Hikers are warned to keep dogs on a leash, and that free roaming pets may attract, and be attacked by, wolves or cougars. (Rating A-)

Amphitrite Lighthouse
Located on Amphirite Point along the Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet, this lighthouse went into operation in 1915. In Greek mythology, Amphitrite is the sea-goddess wife of Poseidon. Seven ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS Amphitrite. This point on Vancouver Island is named after the sixth of these, a twenty-four-gun, 1064-ton vessel, built in Bombay, India and stationed in British Columbia during the 1850s. The unsheltered waters off Amphitrite Point pound the rugged shoreline during severe winter storms, packing thirty to fifty-foot waves, hurricane force winds, and bone-chilling rain (130 inches annually). Canada’s one-day record rainfall of 19.3 inches was set near Amphirite Point in 1967.

A longing sigh. Would love to sit in those red chairs and just absorb. Thanks for bringing that to me.
